Back to Public Square

Prior to 1830
On Public Square was the Market House, later used to house the fire engine, and was itself burned in June 1855.

Also on the square was the Meeting House (Old Ship Zion), built in 1812.

Also the Academy, erected 1804.

The Court House, 1804.

And the County Offices, a building of stone, where the records were kept. (Old Map)


1840's
On the southern part was located the old frame court house.

On the west portion was the old church known as "Old Ship Zion", with its very tall and graceful steeple, about one hundred and sixty feet in height.

On the northern portion of the square was located the old Wilkes-Barre Academy and the town pump.

On the east portion a stone building which contained the contained the county offices.

At the right of the entrance of Market street was a small open market house, later used to house a fire engine, and itself destroyed by fire in June, 1855. (George R. Bedford)
